Ramblings of an over-caffeinated nerd

Soon the gentle wind will beckon through the leaves while autumn colours fall! It’s been raining heavily here in England this past week (it’s actually chucking it down as I type this), the air is cooler and I’m wearing jumpers again! I’ve already rewatched Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow – one of my favourite movies. Its almost time for my annual rewatch of Over The Garden Wall too. Autumn will be here soon so I’ve made myself a spooky TBR for September to celebrate!

Slasher Summer by C.L. Chen

Autumn doesn’t officially start for a couple weeks so reading a summer horror is still valid! This is one of my most anticipated reads of the year. It released in the US a couple months ago but its only just been published in the UK. It seems there isn’t much buzz for this novel here though. When I requested it through my local Waterstones I expected it to be ready for collection in 2 days, but the staff informed me the wait would be 7 days as they’d have to order it especially from the publisher. Hopefully it’s on shelves in other bookshops in the UK, it would be a shame if this book can’t find it’s readership because its not readily available in shops!

Out There Screaming by Various Authors, edited by Jordon Peele

This is a horror anthology collection featuring Black authors, curated by Jordan Peele (director of Get Out and Nope). More horror readers are reaching for anthologies every year, though they tend to lean more towards ones published by Stephen King alone. I wanted to branch out and find a collection of short stories by other authors (I do enjoy King’s work but he gets a lot of attention already). I came across Out There Screaming while browsing the horror section of Blackwells in Oxford earlier this month.

Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil by V.E. Schwab

I have been wanting to read this vampire novel by V.E. Schwab for a very long time! This is a story that follows several women and their experience becoming vampires, in both the past and current day. Its a story about power, lust and tragedy. I received the paperback from Dryad Book’s August Book of the Month fantasy subscription.

The Plague Stones by James Brogden

This horror novel is inspired by plague stones (stones marking out a perimeter where those infected by plague cannot enter) which can still be found in rural towns and villages today. Here we follow a London couple who leave the city for a quieter life in a small village and end up messing with the plague stone in their garden… leading to a hellish nightmare.
