Welcome to to my 2023 wrap up! I read 21 books this year though I’m actually pretty disappointed with this, despite smashing my yearly reading goal. I originally set my challenge to 12 as I did not complete my 2022 goal (I read 20+ books last year but still lost), so didn’t want to put any pressure on myself, especially as I knew I was going to have a pretty hectic 2023. I figured if I read a book a month I’d be happy (there were too months where I didn’t finish a single book, oops).

I love that “hopeful” is the smallest chunk while “adventurous” and “dark” are the largest. Perfectly displays that I read quite a few grimdark fantasy books this year.

This is what I expected, most of the books I read are pretty chunky. The <300 books are the two manga volumes I read this year. I had no excuse not to read more manga, I’ve got all 22 volumes of Beastars on my bookshelves, as well as 26 volumes of Black Butler (I believe 32 volumes are currently published).

I’m a little disappointed I didn’t read more non-fiction books next year. I mentioned in my End of Year Book Haul I’m starting a non-fiction book club in 2024, every month I’ll be picking one non-fiction book to read (think I’m going to call it Non-Fiction Monthly, if you can think of a better name let me know). Hopefully calling it a “book club” and posting about it will hold me accountable if I don’t finish it lol.

Of course Fantasy was the most popular genre of 2023. I’m a little disappointed Horror and LGBTQIA+ are so low, definitely going to make sure I read more of those next year.

This graph is a little boring, isn’t it? 😂 I had no repeat authors apart from Joe Abercrombie. I finished The Great Leveller standalones from The World of the First Law. I have the short story collection, Sharp Ends, to read before I can start the Age of Madness trilogy. For 2024 I need to work on reading more series/books by the same authors.

21 books, 8906 pages, 12 months. You may notice I didn’t read any books between March/April but then averaged two books a month for the rest of the year.
